[IMPACT Webinar] APAC at the Heart of SAF Ecosystem: Visionaries, Partnerships, and Opportunities
Introduction:
As the world accelerates its efforts toward decarbonizing aviation, the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region stands at a pivotal juncture in driving the global adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). With its abundant resources, dynamic economies, and growing commitment to sustainability, APAC has become an indispensable part of the global SAF ecosystem.
This webinar brings together diverse key stakeholders, including government representatives, aircraft manufacturers, investors, SAF producers, and certification agencies, to explore the region's opportunities, challenges, and collaborative pathways for advancing SAF. Through thought-provoking keynotes and a dynamic panel discussion, we will delve into APAC’s role as a leader in the SAF supply chain, its collaborative potential on the global stage, and the necessary steps to capitalize on this transformative industry.

Key Takeaways
Ross Cooper, Director – Investment and Sector Lead for Net Zero Transport and Low Carbon Liquid Fuels at Austrade, discussed Australia’s strategic role in the SAF industry. He emphasized the country’s strong feedstock availability, government incentives, and investment in renewable energy as key drivers for SAF production. Ross highlighted Australia’s net-zero targets and how public-private partnerships can help bridge gaps in the SAF supply chain.
Gabriel Ho, Founder and Chief Strategy Officer of the Asia Sustainable Aviation Fuel Association (ASAFA), provided an overview of the APAC region’s accelerating SAF adoption. He outlined ambitious targets set by countries like Japan and Singapore, backed by government subsidies and incentives. Gabriel emphasized the importance of policy harmonization, market-driven incentives, and infrastructure development in positioning APAC as a global SAF hub.
Mac Irvine, Chief Financial Officer of Jet Zero Australia, presented the company’s SAF production roadmap and investment strategy. He highlighted key projects, including Project Ulysses in Townsville, Queensland and Project Mandala in Singapore, which aim to scale SAF production using sustainable feedstocks. Mac discussed the role of proven SAF technologies (HEFA & ATJ) and government support in ensuring cost-effective, scalable SAF solutions.
Adam Kirby, Senior Sustainability Manager, Sustainable Fuels of ISCC introduced that ISCC offers various certification systems like ISCC EU, ISCC PLUS, and ISCC CORSIA, tailored to different market needs and regulatory requirements. SAF certification by ISCC ensures sustainability in feedstock production, traceability throughout the supply chain, and quantifiable GHG emissions reductions. The presentation also highlights the growth in ISCC CORSIA certifications, the importance of SAF in achieving net-zero goals, and the increasing demand for SAF in both voluntary and regulated markets.
For the Panel Discussion, here are the key questions answered:
-
What will be the trigger point for SAF mandate to be introduced for APAC & who can be potential contributors for the price difference?
-
Given your learnings from the hydrogen industry, when do you see renewable fuels, mandates be implemented for SAF in APAC? (by Mr. Stephen Forshaw)
-
Will the market scheme of SAF be more like a Global Competition or Regional Collaboration?
-
Why did Project Ulysess choose Queensland and how could state governments provide more support to proponents with projects in the LCLF space? (by Mr. Mac Irvine)
-
What will drive the economic uptake of SAF more, reducing costs of SAF production or increase penalties for carbon emissions?
-
Regarding certification systems, is there any frameworks APAC can use as reference from EU or the US? (by Mr. Adam Kirby)
